The Hangover: How to Successfully Recover From a Social Media Mishap

Don't let a little slip-up on the internet hold you back from your goals.

For all the benefits social media provides marketers and business owners, it does have one little draw back: It remembers everything. Some professionals have learned this the hard way after posting something insensitive, incorrect, or otherwise reputation-damaging. Have you ever woken up to hoards of angry internet followers on Twitter, Facebook, or your blog? Take comfort in knowing you are not the first, and you can get through this.

  • Acknowledge where you went wrong. Release a brief and professional apology or clarification following the incident. Ignoring the incident will not make it go away.
  • Don't engage with those who taunt you. Getting angry or defensive will not help you. If anything, it will only draw in more people to watch the train wreck. Once you have posted a calm, professional response, resolve to say no more on the issue.
  • Continue to provide valuable content. Maybe everyone else is still talking about your embarrassing mishap, but if you want to stay in the game you can't hide. Now is the time to remind your followers why they subscribed to you in the first place.
  • Give it time. It won't blow over as fast as you'd like, but it will blow over eventually. Just keep doing what you're doing, and soon enough, someone else will mess up and you will be yesterday's news.
